At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 — the first night of Chanukah — Chabad Lubavitch of CNY will hold a special program at the Downtown Menorah Lighting in Hanover Square.
Jewish educational outreach organization Chabad-Lubavitch of Central New York will begin its celebration of Shavuot this year with a “Bridge the Generations Ice Cream Party and Reading of The Ten Commandments” event.
Patricia Thomas-Becker, 75, a resident of Menorah Park’s Jewish Health and Rehabilitation, will become a bat mitzvah. Patricia was inspired by her grandchildren, Caroline and Jonathan Kahn.

When Alicia Wood and other members of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Mattydale sat down and looked at the demographics of the community, they were surprised to see how many young families lived in the area. “I thought it was an elderly community, but it’s not.,” Wood said. “There are a lot of ground-level families just starting out.” Wood said many of those families are fighting to make ends meet. “We feel like in Mattydale, we have a lot of working families that are still struggling,” she said. “Sometimes clothes or winter boots or winter coats are the last thing you can afford.” That’s how Wood came up with the idea of Easter Morning, the clothing closet located in the basement of the church at the corner of Molloy and Mitchell roads in Mattydale. The organization offers clothes for infants, kids, teens, women and men, all free of charge, to anyone in the community.

The Sentimental Serenade invites the community to attend their holiday show at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Oran Community Church. The Serenade will be joined by Brownie Troop 86 and by young vocalist, Christina Bell. The concert is free, but an offering will be taken to benefit the Oran Community Church Roof Fund.
Travellers look to combine faith and service for an ecumenical experience
Dec. 26 to 31, Cazenovia teens and parents from Eastern Hills Bible Church and St. James Catholic Church will travel to Haiti sharing faith and providing service to St. Ives Catholic Church in northern Haiti.
The First Presbyterian Church in Cazenovia will celebrate the Advent Season by lighting the angel candle, the fourth candle on the Advent wreath, during the morning worship service at 10 a.m. on Dec. 18.
